Don't chase: the first-half rule

Lesson 6 of 15 · Trading the setup · 3 min read

The worst time to enter a breakout is after most of the move has happened. You pay a high price, the remaining reward is small, and the distance to your exit is large.

The first-half rule

If you missed the close, only take the trade if price is still in the first half of the move, between the hub edge and the halfway point to the aim. Past that, the reward left is usually smaller than the risk back to the hub. Skip it.

NextShelf applies the same idea to its own alerts: a breakout that has already reached its aim doesn't ring your phone, and it's marked as "skipped (too far)" in the track record.

There's always another setup

Hundreds of stocks are scanned after every close. Missing one move costs nothing. Chasing it often costs a lot.

Key points
  • Late entries have small rewards and big risks.
  • Only enter in the first half of the move to the aim.
  • Missing a trade is free; chasing one isn't.
